Second Annual Fiber Festival

Join us for the 2nd Annual Fiber Arts Festival at the Powerhouse (413 S. 14th Street, Oxford MS) on Friday, January 20 through Sunday, January 22. This event is free and features exhibits, live demonstrations, and vendors. Kids can take part in free workshops and parents can learn from fiber artists who will be teaching workshops throughout the event.

Demonstrators will be on hand showing how fibers are cultivated, without harm to the animals, from llamas, rabbits and other animals. Weavers and spinners will be on sight during the event.

The event has something for everyone.  Learn how fibers become functional works of art, create your own work in one of the classes, or bring the family to experience all the different activities.

Knit1 Oxford is delighted that two Oxford hotels have agreed to offer special rates to Fiber Festival guests. Please contact Hampton Inn Conference Center at 662-234-5565
and mention "Fiber Festival" by January 9th or Downtown Oxford Inn at 1-800-606-1497 by January 13th to take advantage of this great deal.

Opening Lecture

The opening lecture Friday evening will be given by Linda Weghorst on "African Kente Cloth Weaving."  Ms. Weghorst, a fiber artist, weaver and educator, visited Ghana, Africa in 2009 to study the artists and art of Kente cloth weavers.  Samples of the cloth and other native crafts will be on display after the talk and slide show.  The lecture will be at 6:30 p.m.

Ms. Weghorst will teach a Woven Jewelry Workshop on Saturday during the fiber festival.  Pin loom weaving will be used to create elegant, one-of-a-kind pins and neckpieces.

Trained as a professional artist at Ball State University and the Art Institute of Chicago (MFA, Fiber Arts), Ms. Weghorst has exhibited her work and taught workshops throughout the United States.  Her tapestries have been commissioned for a wide range of public architectural settings, including corporate, government, university and religious institutions.

Please stop by or call Knit 1 Oxford for more information or to register for the Handwoven Jewelry Workshop, 662-238-2829.

Feel the Warmth
Knit1 Oxford has teamed up with OEPE (Oxford Endowment for Public Education) and LEFE (Lafayette Endowment Fund for Education) to raise money for Oxford and Lafayette County schools. Knitters in our community have created three heirloom-quality afghans to be raffled off at the festival. Proceeds from the afghans will be split between OEPE and LEFE. Tickets for a child’s afghan will be priced so kids can use their own money to enter to win and support their school at the same time. This is a fun and easy way to support OEPE and LEFE, which fund teachers’ proposals for books, instruments and equipment!
