Shetland Sky and Sea – Fiber Arts Festival – January 28-30

Sky and sea cobweb class photoThe Sixth Annual Fiber Arts Festival is coming up and we cannot wait!

The Festival will be held at the Oxford Powerhouse on Friday, January 29 and Saturday, January 30, 2016, with some additional classes and opening reception on Thursday, January 28, 2016.

Every day, we will post information about one of the 22 classes and information about one of the participating vendors.

Our featured class today is Shetland Sky and Sea.

On Friday, January 29, 2016 from noon until 3 p.m., Denise Bell will be our guide as we explore the themes of sky and sea which are frequently represented in Shetland designs.  Would you expect anything less from the beautiful but hard-to-reach islands located where the Atlantic Ocean meets the North Sea?  In this fine lace class we’ll look at two specific Shetland stitches, the Bird’s Eye and the Cockleshell.  Both stitches require a bit of concentration but are well worth the effort when a traditional Shetland lace shawl is your goal. We will be knitting a swatch.  It’s not a miniature shawl.  It’s just a swatch, knit for the simple joy of creating and allowing you, the student, to practice two fun traditional Shetland stitches.  I’m a firm believer in swatches – they let us experiment and learn but require no long term commitment.  This class will cost $45.

Call the Shop starting on December 20 to sign up for this class!  Space is limited, so be sure to sign up soon.  For full class listings, visit our class page.
